On Saturday, August 6, Big Island Grown will present 808 Day, a charitable celebration of our island culture through music, art, food, and good vibes. The event will be held at BREW (formerly Brewer’s Block) in Kailua-Kona and will start at 3 p.m. Tickets are available online at Eventbrite.
Started by the PFTP Foundation with support from Hawaii medical cannabis company Big Island Grown, this emerging local holiday quickly garnered the support of other businesses and organizations like Kona Brewing Co., KWXX, Umekes, Tony’s Honda, Vibe Cafe and Ironman. Vendors like Willie’s Hot Chicken, HiCo, Laulima Food Patch, Kalo Bombs, Kanaka Kava, Kula Shave Ice, Treehouse Collective, Malama Mushrooms, and Kona Kombucha will be serving up local sips and grinds. The Hilo Axe Lounge will be hosting games, CurrentSea will manage recycling and compostable materials and disposal of refuse while Viking Security will be keeping the peace.
The musical lineup for 808 Day is stacked from beginning to end. Leilani Wolfgramm, Ka‘ikena Scanlan & These Guys, Josh Heinrichs & SkillinJah, and Lopaka Rootz are all billed for the evening’s festivity. DJ’s Scotty Doo and Sapience along with MCs Zavier Cummings (@howsdisguy) and Irie Hawaii’s Jose (Woo Wooo!) are sure to keep the party flowing between sets.
The opening slot in the lineup is reserved for one more local act. Prior to the event, the crew at 808 Day will be asking local music makers to post a video on Instagram showcasing why they should play 808 Day. On July 6, a winner will be selected to kick off the event and win $500.
Musicians aren’t the only artists being featured at 808 Day. In coordination with BIG’s Cultivating Art series, artists William Gilliam, Dan Madsen, Dante Orpilla, and Jacob Medina will be collaborating on a live painting tribute to the one-day festival.
Tickets go on sale Saturday, June 18th, at 8:00 AM with the first 300 tickets available for only $8.08! Although this extreme deal is limited to 1 per person, the Early Bird ticket price is still a great deal at $30 per person. Early Bird passes will be available through July 4th, then General Admission tickets will be $40 leading up to the show and $50 at the door (if any are remaining).
Early Bird VIP passes will be available for $125 a person and includes a complimentary drink from Kona Brewing Co and Kona Kombucha, some ‘ono food courtesy of Umekes, a private bar, a private game lounge, private luas, and a special gift courtesy of Big Island Grown. VIP tickets go up to $150 after July 4th.
The best part about this event is that it is set up to benefit our local community. 100% of all profit from ticket sales will be donated to benefit the Big Island Grown Kokua Program; a program for terminally ill and in-need patients unable to afford their medicine. 10% of all beverages and food sales will be donated to a charity of the vendor’s choice, allowing many other local organizations to be uplifted by the success of this event.
