The Kahilu Theatre will present Ann Hoku Lyn: The Love Rebel Concert on Thursday, March 24, 2022, at 7 p.m. For tickets/info, call (808) 885-6868 or visit https://kahilutheatre.org/.
Ann is making her Kahilu debut and is bringing her full band, including multi-instrumentalist Reggie Griffin, Russ McKinnon (drummer), Matt Spencer (bass), Loren Wilken (keyboards), Truth Muiz (guitar & harmonica), Binti Bailey (vocals, flute & percussion), Huanani Wehrsig (background vocals), and Moni (vocals).
Ann Hoku Lyn is a composer, trumpeter, and recording artist. Born in Panama and raised in the Marshall Islands, her unique upbringing infuses her compositions with a musical style, both urban and tropical, with inflections of Latin, funk, reggae, and neo-soul.
After earning a jazz trumpet degree from Oberlin Conservatory, Annʻs career began in NYC, where she performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Madison Square Garden, and in the NYC subways. She has also written and recorded songs for other artists and was approached by Usher’s label to sign between tours. Preferring instead to write and tour as a freelance trumpeter, Ann rejected the offer and continued to search and evolve, blazing her path and searching for the music most authentic to her soul.
Locals may have heard Ann playing trumpet with bands like Bump City, the Olliephonics, Kahulanui, and the Kamuela Philharmonic, or they may know her as the co-founder and director of the Big Island Music Academy. Ann is working on an album to be released this year, blending jazzy trumpet riffs, syncopated rhythms, and sultry vocals that tell a story of struggle, strength, and creative rebirth.
The Love Rebel Concert at Kahilu Theater is a unique multi-media experience that stands alone and will not be forgotten. Hoku Lyn says, “The song Love Rebel was created out of the experience of responding to hatred with love and produced to encourage people to rebel against the systems that seek to divide us.” The full-length music video was released on February 14 on YouTube.
