With a few Big Island venues opening up this week, it’s not too late to jump on the livestream bandwagon to listen or perform. As a musician and entrepreneur with many fingers in the success pie, patience, persistence, and adaptability all help one thrive during challenging times like the one we are experiencing. I enjoy enriching lives through music. Working as a teacher, when times were normal, has morphed into my income flowing from music almost entirely for the first time in my life. Although surviving on 1/20th of the income I was making pre-COVID-19 feels rather absurd and frankly frightening.…

Uma’s Ultimate Kona Konnection is a column covering the music scene of Kailua Kona. This week’s focus is on Sage Sounds Musician’s Lounge Music Industry Mixer, which meets every third Monday from 6-8 p.m. in Kainaliu above Kiernan’s Music Store. Recently I had the opportunity to meet with about 26 other local musicians as we were invited to gather and talk story at the new Sage Sounds Musicians Lounge. Uma’s Ultimate Kona Konnection is a column covering the music scene of Kailua Kona. This week’s focus is on Acoustic Minds, a duo out of Portland who will play at Papa Kona on January 22 at 6 p.m. and in Kealakekua at the Korner Pocket on January 25 at 7 p.m. No, you’re not seeing double if you go see an Acoustic Minds show…these lovely guitar & ukulele playing songbirds are twins from Portland, Oregon. We first met at a Ladies Artesan Market function at the now-defunct Daylight Mind in Kona, as we were both playing music. I felt inspired…

Uma’s Ultimate Kona Konnection is a column that covers the music scene of Kailua Kona. This week’s focus is on David Mark Miller, a newly transplanted keyboard and bass player. He plays this Saturday (November 23) at Laverne’s with Green Machine for their Led Zeppelin tribute show from 7-10 p.m. The music business is such a fickle mistress. Recently, I reluctantly turned down a prime spot due to a scheduling conflict with a private party. I even met with David Mark Miller to discuss our upcoming songs. I should’ve checked about the possibility of moving the party date; little could…

Uma’s Ultimate Kona Konnection is a weekly column covering the music scene of Kailua Kona. This week she spotlights Ryan Sabate, who graces the stage at Laverne’s Sports Bar Nov. 16. You can always expect a fun, energizing show with new and classic, danceable, Pop, Rock, Funk and Top 40 hits. The venue is partially outdoors, and the views are always amazing, especially at sunset.  Years before I had my own bands here in Hawaii, when I mostly sat in with my husband’s band, Ryan Sabate invited me to join his group as a featured vocalist whilst they played upstairs…

Uma’s Ultimate Kona Konnection is a weekly column covering the music scene of Kailua Kona. This week’s focus is on Ann Hoku Lyn, a local trumpet player, and Big Island Music Academy youth music teacher. Having been on the Big Island of Hawaii for almost 10 years now, I’ve had the chance to hear Ann (formerly Andrea Lindborg) play trumpet and sing a few times. Most memorable was a few years ago at the Kona Brewer’s Festival on the King Kamehameha stage. Ann Hoku Lyn is a composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist. She studied Jazz trumpet performance at Oberlin Conservatory and received an…
