The Big Island Songwriters is a small community of composers/musicians. They were scheduled to perform at Kahilu Theatre’s Mike Luce studio on April 18, but since all public live shows have been canceled due to COVID-19 regulations, they have opted to do their show on Zoom this Saturday, May 9, 2020, at 1 p.m.
The performance will be a “double-round-robin” style, with each entertainer playing two original songs before passing the mic, err, audio unmute, to the next artist. The show is free and open to anyone who wants to listen and watch.
“We don’t take ourselves too seriously, and we like to have fun with song challenges and just spur each other on to write great tunes” explains member Ryan Higgins. There are two activities of the group: one is a monthly meet up in Waimea (and now online) where they discuss a segment of songwriting (melody, phrasing, the recording process, etc.). The other is an online challenge, where one member sends out a prompt [word or phrase]and everyone has a week to write a song using the prompt.
This Saturday’s performance will feature Marie De La Vega, Ryan Higgins, Kathy Fraser, Ellen Keehan, Teresa Young, Matt Binder, Marianne Bacon, Kristin Lagasse, and Robert Savery.
