On June 18, singer-songwriter Kumsa Maphalala will be releasing her new single, “Kona State of Mind” on all digital platforms. KAPA-FM debuted it May 30, and this is Kumsa’s third release following her 2020 EP, Flow of Life.
“Kona State of Mind” has a completely different feel to it in contrast to other songs she’s written. It’s a fun, upbeat island-style song inspired by Kumsa’s childhood experiences growing up in beautiful Hawaii. It’s the kind of song you’ll want to turn up when you’re heading down the coast to your favorite beach on the Kona side.
Kumsa wrote this song last year when the COVID pandemic began while living far away from home as a student at EARTH University, in Costa Rica. Over her winter break, she returned to the Big Island and recorded it at Mana Music and Media with producer Michael Surprenant. This single is dedicated to all the inspirational and supportive people who have influenced Kumsa throughout her life.
“Kona State of Mind came to her while in a nostalgic state missing her island home and the amazing feeling it is to escape for a weekend and drive down the coast to the Kona side, capturing her early childhood memories of spending weekends on the beaches, swimming with dolphins in the crystal blue water, and hiking the incredible Pololū valley.
“A new voice is rising in the land of Pele with songs as powerful as its fire and as soothing as its waters.”
– Chris Berry, Grammy Award-winning Singer, Songwriter, and musician
This song will leave anyone who grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii, or who has ever had the opportunity to visit it, reminiscing upon its beauty and good vibes. This song features the very talented local musicians Matt Spencer on guitar/bass, Michael Surprenant on drums and percussion, and Sarah Bethany on backup vocals.
“Kona State of Mind” offers a softer, feel-good, island-style genre, with inspiration drawn from some of Kumsa’s favorite island artists, such as Jack Johnson, Paula Fuga, and others. Kumsa’s deep love for music and expression shines through her words and in this song, she aims to make the listener feel at home, with descriptions of nostalgic memories of the beautiful Island of Hawaii.
