The Sweeney Todds of punk rock release new Live in Europe album May 15
It’s November 2019 – pre-pandemic pandemonium – and the Cutthroat Brothers are slicing and dicing a bloody path on their successful first European tour. From Berlin to Belgium and beyond, the crowds are wild, and the music is razor-sharp. Everything is set for these real-life barbers to return and blood-let more of Europe with their brash and ballsy garage punk in May 2020. (Besides being musicians, the duo are real-life barbers too – Donny Paycheck has a shop in Tacoma, and Jason Cutthroat is in Kona.)
Suddenly, a change of plans! COVID-19 happens and everything grinds to a screeching halt. A global pandemic followed by travel bans and quarantines changes everything overnight, causing The Cutthroat Brothers’ upcoming tour to be postponed.
During the chaos, at the bottom of a carry-on bag, a recording from the last show of the last tour is unearthed and it’s glorious. Recorded November 23, 2019, at Muziekclub 4AD in Belgium, it features 12 tight and feverish renditions from the band’s two epic releases (their self-titled first album and last year’s Taste for Evil, released on Hound Gawd! Records).
The Cutthroat Brothers slash and burn with these live tracks, leaving you wanting more. The album opens with singer Jason Cutthroat beckoning the crowd to “Come closer, children…” only to smash them with the garage stomp of the frenzied opener “Shake, Move, Howl, Kill.” Drummer Donny Paycheck (ex-Zeke) crushes the crowd with an extended and murderous drum solo on “Kill 4 U.” “Black Candle” weaves a wicked voodoo spell. The relentless heavy blues closer “The King is Dead” leaves the audience bleeding on the floor and begging for more. It’s a crazy ride that feels like being strapped to a barber chair welded to the front of a freight train.
Jack Endino (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden) mixed and mastered from afar, while everyone was quarantined in their respective homes. This is his third collaboration with The Cutthroat Brothers.
The Cutthroat Brothers Live in Europe features 12 tracks hotter than a straight razor shave and just in time to spill a little blood on these crazy, uncertain times. If you aren’t able to see The Cutthroat Brothers on tour right now, this is the next best thing.
