“Wild Things”

May 8 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Prince Dance Company presents its first live production at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea in three years!

On Saturday, May 7, 2022, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, May 8, 2022, at 4 p.m., Prince Dance Company (PDC) presents “Wild Things” at the Kahilu Theatre. Inspired by the beloved children’s book, “Where the Wild Things Are,” PDC’s production of “Wild Things” puts a fresh and contemporary spin on the classic tale. Directed by Angel Prince and written by Angel Prince and Noelani Anderson, “Wild Things” features over 100 performers from Prince Dance Institute (PDI) and is the first time in three years PDC has presented a live show at Kahilu Theatre. Ticket info is below.

“To perform for a live audience on a stage is what a performing arts education is all about. We are thrilled to be able to do what we love for a live audience again and feel the rush and excitement of an opening night,” said Prince. “These students have worked very hard for the past three years to continue to become better at their craft without the hopes of a live stage show, and finally, this year, they will again feel the excitement of live theatre!”

“Wild Things” follows the story’s protagonist, Maxx, on a journey of self-discovery. It is a theatrical telling of this hero’s journey to a faraway land filled with mysterious creatures, mystical beings, and powerful spells. Maxx and their friends must find a way to face their fears and discover the potential of what lies inside their hearts.

To develop the idea for the spring show, Prince Dance Institute partnered with Thelma Parker Memorial Public and School Library in Waimea throughout the 2021-2022 school year with a theme called “Write Your Own Story.” The collaboration led to the organizations facilitating reading challenges, public performances, and scavenger hunts. It also led to the discovery of the story that inspired “Wild Things.”

“Our partnership with Thelma Parker Library has been inspiring,” Prince added. “ ’Wild Things’ is our first production based on a book, and the library’s fantastic selection made choosing the story to base the show on an easy task. Everyone jumped right into the creativity and imagination of creating a story inspired by the classic book.”

“It’s been fun to work with the actors using divisive theatre techniques to create a dynamic plot inspired by a classic story,” said Anderson. “Themes of identity, self-discovery and collective transformation through adventure were the natural outcome. As always, bringing characters to life and seeing where the student actors go with it is the thrill of being an artist and a teacher.”

In addition to the storyline, “Wild Things” includes contemporary dance, ballet, aerial silks, trapeze dance, hip-hop and breakdancing, acting, glee, and musical theatre and features new choreography by PDI instructors Aleks Holmes, Angel Prince, Erin Kawakami, Kat Ruess, Mike Sato, Noelani Anderson, Shawna Gordon, and Sage Nicholson.
