The Kahilu Theatre presents singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joachim Cooder on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at 7 p.m. For tickets/info, call (808) 885-6868 or visit https://kahilutheatre.org/.
Joachim Cooder is a musician who leads a double life: he’s a celebrated percussionist who has worked with several respected roots and world music artists, while he also records as a headliner, where his primary instrument is the electric mbira, a variation on the traditional African thumb piano. As a sideman, his versatile style has found him working with his father, Ry Cooder, on the legendary Cuban ensemble Buena Vista Social Club sessions and inventive Indian instrumentalist Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Joachim has also worked on his own with artists like Ali Farka Touré, who inspired Cooder to take up the mbira.
As a bandleader, his music is an atmospheric blend of folk, blues, and African music that encompasses familiar themes with an otherworldly instrumental texture. Cooderʻs music is best heard on the 2017 EP Fuchsia Machu Picchu and the 2020 album Over That Road I’m Bound. He has also produced albums for other artists, composed for film, and collaborated with choreographer Daniel Ezralow.
