Prepare for a once-in-a-lifetime evening as treasured Hawaiian musician John Cruz celebrates the 25th Anniversary of his album Acoustic Soul by playing the entire album at Kahilu Theatre on Saturday, May 28, 2022, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. For tickets/info, call (808) 885-6868 or visit https://kahilutheatre.org/.
Twenty-five years ago, John Cruz released Acoustic Soul, one of the most celebrated and best-selling Hawaii albums of all time, launching multiple new anthems into the Hawaii pantheon and earning Cruz two Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards in 1997 — one for Contemporary Album of the Year and one for Most Promising Artist.
In this exceptional performance, Cruz will, for the first time, play every song from his Acoustic Soul album — bringing the record and era to life with stories and special musical guests. In addition, songs from the album will be interspersed with additional, heartfelt compositions spanning Cruz’s entire career.
“Last year, I launched my ‘Island Style’ weekly concert residency at ProArts Maui — serving as step one of my commemorations of this 25th Anniversary milestone,” shares Cruz. “That show has been a lifesaver — not only helping me get through the pandemic’s financial hurdles but also reconnecting me with the power of having a musical home, a place in Hawaii where I connect with friends and fans week after week just like I did in the late ’90s at Hot Lava. Thinking about this upcoming tour puts a big smile on my face — singing these songs, talking story about all the good times, and bonding with everyone. What more could you ask for?”
Fans are encouraged to contribute their stories about Acoustic Soul and John Cruz and images and videos from the 90s era via this link: https://bit.ly/johncruzfan. Everyone who submits a contribution or attends a concert is automatically entered into a contest with the grand-prize winner to receive an at-home Acoustic Soul concert performance by Cruz anywhere in Hawaii.
Taking a close look at Cruz’s iconic album with the benefit of time passed, those close to Cruz recognize Acoustic Soul as a representation of Cruz himself. “The album is a statement of John’s core values and largely, a gift from John to Hawaii and the world,” shares Cruz’s longtime manager Mark Tarone. “John’s compassion for others is unmatched; with songs ‘Island Style,’ ‘Shine On,’ and ‘Mama’s Lil’ Baby,’ he calls out the need for us to care for and love each other. In ‘The River Runs’ and ‘Island Style,’ John encourages us to take pride in Hawaii and put our best foot forward. Overall, the album is a quest to inspire – John seeking to lead through action, helping others, especially Hawaiians and people of Hawaii, see what we can achieve when we commit to being true to ourselves and not settling for simply ‘good enough.’”
