The Kona Harp Ensemble’s Celtic Christmas will be shown live on Kahilu.TV on Friday, Dec. 18, at 7:00 p.m. This beautiful evening will feature enchanting music from the oldest written piece of music from Syria, English Renaissance, Irish Baroque, Russian, and Hawaiian traditional music to contemporary works by Leonard Cohen, James Horner, and Ennio Morricone. The quartet ensemble for the performances comprises Manuel Roberto (Hawaiian bamboo flutes, Bansuri, Japanese Shakuhachi, Native American flute, and Irish piccolo flute), Bernice Roberto (harp and vocalist), Jean-Pierre Thoma (gold flute, clarinet, and saxophone), and Madhavi Infinity (harp, keyboards, and vocals). The group has released three CDs since forming a decade ago, in addition to individual releases by the ensemble members.
Manuel Roberto is a World Music flutist, a master of the wooden and bamboo flutes including the Bansuri, Shakuhachi, Native American, Hawaiian Bamboo flutes, and the Irish piccolo flute. He has studied with some of the greatest musicians in the world including GS Sachdev, Zakir Hussain, and Pandit Jasraj. Manuel has also composed music for theatre and television.
Bernice Roberto began studying harp with Francis Duffy of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Bernice is the main vocalist of the ensemble, as well as a composer, songwriter, and vocalist who performs regularly at the Four Seasons Resort, Sheraton, and Hilton Hotels. Bernice and her husband Manuel Roberto have performed internationally and share a love for music.
Jean Pierre Thoma is a world-traveled musician and educator. He performs on flute, saxophone, and clarinet. Besides completing a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music, he has performed in Europe, Japan, India, and Africa. Thoma currently teaches at the Pacific Academy in Hilo, Hawaii.
Madhavi Infinity was born in Estonia in a family of musicians. She studied harp, piano, and voice in Europe and has performed in England, Scotland, and Estonia. Her artistic interests have led her to the studies of Celtic harp music and the works of Turlough O’Carolan.
Kona Harp Ensemble has been featured in Hawaiian Airline’s Hana Hou, West Hawaii Today, and Ke Ola Magazine. Manuel Roberto, director of the ensemble, has been reviewed by The New York Times and The Philadelphia Enquirer for his compositions for theatre and television.
