On Saturday, May 11, 2019, at 4:00 p.m., at the Hilton Waikoloa Village’s Monarch Ballroom, the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra (KPO) presents its first-ever pops gala. The concert, “Pops Goes the Philharmonic” will feature classic gems from Broadway and the silver screen by the most recognizable and beloved composers of all time and includes guest performances from some of Hawai‘i Island’s favorite artists. Ticket info below.
Under the baton of KPO artistic director and conductor Brian Dollinger, the orchestra and its many talented musicians will take concert-goers on a more contemporary musical journey down memory lane with classics by Calvin Custer, Bruce Chase, Leroy Anderson, Henry Mancini, Jerry Brubaker, and more.
“An orchestra has many different types of music at its disposal from the great symphonic masters of Mozart and Beethoven to iconic Broadway and movie masterpieces like ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Porgy and Bess,’” stated Dollinger. “Bringing to life fantastic collections of popular medleys is a great way to enjoy a modern symphonic orchestra.”
In addition to the pops-style repertoire, the orchestra has also invited other local artists to join in on the fun. The concert will feature performances from pianist Cheryl “Quack” Moore of “Saturday Night Live” fame, and vocalists Beth Dunnington and Kat Reuss—prominent fixtures in the Hawai‘i Island performing arts scene.
“Partnering with some of Hawai‘i island’s most talented vocalists will be a unique addition to this performance,” Dollinger added. “Their powerful, velvet-like voices will showcase a wide variety of Broadway and jazz standards that will make the event sparkle.”
