Hawaii Public Radio once called the weekly Wednesday night music event at the Landing Restaurant and Bar in Honokaa “The Greatest Open Mic,” and new owner Tom Whelan, who changed the name to the Last Call Saloon in October, is keeping that tradition going.
The Last Call Saloon doubles primarily as a sports bar, with multiple screens in every direction, as well as a place get your karaoke on. Locals love it! But if you want to hear or perform live music, this is the place.
Open mic nights are coordinated by the talented singer/songwriter Rachael Scott and Mikiala Yardley (above right), and the music played features a wide spectrum of local talent. “Open mic nights are really popular and a lot fun to watch,” said owner Tom Wheeler. Whelan’s no stranger to the bar/restaurant business having owned a club in Long Island.
The building that houses the Last Call Saloon is over 100 years old, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It once served the public as The First Bank of Hilo. “It’s been a bar for the last eight years,” added Whelan. “In the fall and winter, the ratio of customers is about 90% locals, and that drops down to about 80% during tourist season,” said Whelan (above). He’s expanded the menu, but still offers the same great pizza and beer that have been favorites for years.
