Legendary Southern California punk rock band D.I. returns to the Big Island Friday, March 6, for their first concert here since 2006. D.I.’s show at the Hilo Town Tavern will also feature Superfuct (Honolulu), Badass Noise (Puna), and El Sancho (Waikoloa) Ticket info below.
The band has been performing since the early 1980s and was highlighted in the 1983 Penelope Spheeris drama Suburbia, which featured a backdrop of live punk rock music to tell the story of a group of disillusioned teens trying to. D.I. caps off a night featuring four punk rock bands, something rarely seen on the Big Island.
Known for songs like “Richard Hung Himself” and “Hang Ten in East Berlin,” D.I.’s vocalist Casey Royer mixes sarcastic wit with bleak social commentary to create a distinctive sound that has influenced thousands of bands around the world over the past 30 years.
This is the first Big Island concert by promoter Blacklisted Productions, a collective of Hawaii musicians who are dedicated to bringing punk and metal acts from the mainland to the Hawaiian Islands. While primarily based on Oahu, Blacklisted is planning to set up shows on all islands.
“We are stoked to bring loud, aggressive live music back to the Big Island,” says Lundy Kramer, guitarist from Badass Noise and a member of the Blacklisted Productions collective. Blacklisted Productions plans to bring several mainland acts to the Big Island in 2020 and beyond.
Superfuct is a Honolulu-based band that describes themselves as “Fun Political Hardcore Raw Melodic Surf Punk Band Rising From the Crusty Gutters of China Town.” Badass Noise, a punk/metal band from Puna, rose from the ashes of Big Island punk band Old Habits Die Hard. This will mark Badass Noise’s first appearance on the Big Island in several years. El Sancho is a band from Waikoloa. They released their first EP at the end of 2019, and their new single, “I’m Unhappy to Live on Earth,” is out this week on Spotify and iTunes.
