The 19th Parallel Piano Trio plays music written for violin, cello, and piano. The members have played in a variety of settings and musical styles over the years including several musical theater productions, classical music for audiences at East Hawaii Cultural Center, and at several churches in East Hawaii. Sometimes they like to make it a piano quartet because it’s always fun to include more friends and play great music together!
Kanako Okita (piano) is an accomplished pianist from Japan who has been serving as the choir accompanist of the Church of the Holy Cross since 2015. Since arriving in Hawaii, she has performed in numerous Big Island classical music concerts and in multiple theatre orchestras. Kanako additionally performs in an annual full piano recital in Hilo.
Kelly Stuart (cello) is based on the Big Island of Hawaii. Her career has taken her around the world, performing for musical theatre, chamber ensembles, and as a solo artist. A founding member of the Elbe Ensemble (Dresden, Germany), Kelly was also the Artist-in-Residence for rural schools in South Monterey County, California in 2014 for one year. Holding a Bachelor of Music degree from Boston University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Southern Maine, she currently performs with the Kamuela Philharmonic, the Hilo Community Players, and the 19thParallel Trio. Kelly was also a nominee for the 2020 Pushcart Prize in nonfiction.
Cathy Mulligan Young (piano and violin) has been teaching violin, viola, cello, and piano in Hawaii since 1992, after serving as a Peace Corps volunteer orchestra teacher in Belize City, Belize. Cathy credits her family, teachers, the Alexandria, Virginia Public School system, and Vassar College for her love of music and Dr. Shinichi Suzuki for her love of teaching music. Cathy is a founding member of the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra, where she plays both viola and violin. She is the founder, artistic director, and conductor for Orchid Isle Orchestra, a community string orchestra whose members have guest performed with KPO. Cathy serves as the music director for the Unitarian Universalists of Puna.
