On Saturday, July 2, The Hilo Sessions returns to Kukuau Studio with music by Chris Berry and the Bana Kuma Band, Aguamelon, speaker Hedonisia, and painter Laurie Bauers. Ticket info can be found below.
Grammy award winner Chris Berry is an eclectic singer and songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, virtuoso, and high-energy performer and teacher. From his humble beginning during Robert Mugabe’s regime in Zimbabwe, he has blasted his powerful Afro-infused sound around the World for over twenty years, rocking audiences from NYC’s Irving Plaza to sold-out stadiums in South Africa and Sydney, Australia’s famous Opera House.
Aguamelon is a neo-soul/acid-jazz band, and an exceptionally musical family mothered by Asha Azama. Their music carries messages of love and loss, hope and beauty, perseverance, and the power of the people.
The keynote speaker this month is Hedonisia. Hedonisia has managed a portfolio of social entrepreneur projects focusing on gender equality, reproductive rights, and activist entrepreneurship. They offer educational and sustainable tools for activist entrepreneurs, ecofeminists, and other creative people who wish to make a living by making a difference. In many businesses, professional, social, friendly, or intimate settings, communicating with people from different demographics can sometimes feel challenging. So, it is nice to have simple tools that support open, friendly conversation and discussion.
On the canvas is live painter Laurie Bauers. She has been an artist since childhood, attending formal training in commercial and fine arts from an early age. She began painting in her early 20s and now has incorporated live performance art into her portfolio, painting at music festivals on the Big Island of Hawaii. She is the co-owner of Electric Jungle Tattoo in old town Pahoa, a tattoo shop that exhibits local artists in the gallery. Her work is cosmic in connection, focusing on the vibration of love. Sweeping psychedelic landscapes accompany a human story in her art, allowing the viewer to make up their version
About The Hilo Sessions
The Hilo Sessions is that crossroads where artists and organizers can come together for community empowerment. For too long, Hilo has been missing a consistent arts scene. It is from this void that the creators of The Hilo Sessions get their inspiration. And it’s not just to have a venue where music is happening. The intention is to create a monthly hub that folks can foster as a place of their own to share vital art and information with our people. As a result, local musicians and artists are brought to the stage and sometimes even elected.
The Hilo Sessions is an intimate concert series featuring the finest local artists and local organizers.
An organic elixir bar will serve ‘awa and fresh cold-pressed juices. Kukuau Studio’s donation-based bar will also be open for beer, wine, and spirits
Come early if you’d like to grab seats or talk story with the artists and community organizers.
