UH Hilo Jazz Orchestra’s Zappa Tribute Returns December 5-6

The UH Hilo Jazz Orchestra’s Frank Zappa tribute show returns for its sixth annual performance with Zappa 6: Holiday In Berlinat the UH Hilo Performing Arts Center on December 5th and 6th at 7:30 PM. Ticket info below.

Featuring twenty-plus student performers under the instruction of musical director Trever Veilleux, the Jazz Orchestra will bring to life a selection of music from the late American composer’s catalog. Featuring a varied assortment of Zappa’s eclectic and sometimes outrageous material, the Orchestra promises another exciting installment of their annual tradition.

The Jazz Orchestra’s previous performances have caught the attention of the wider Zappa community. For 2017’s show, the band was joined by Frank Zappa’s son and Grammy-award winning artist Dweezil Zappa for two evenings of performance. The second night included a surprise performance by an alumnus of Frank Zappa’s recording and touring bands, singer Ike Willis.

In early 2018, the Orchestra was invited to perform as part of the 2019 Zappanale festival. A three-day celebration of all things Zappa, the Zappanale festival takes place each year in Bad Doberan, Germany. With hopes of showcasing the efforts of UH Hilo’s young musicians to a wider audience, the Orchestra’s upcoming performance in December will serve as a fundraising event to help the students take their show on the road.  To assist in this effort UH Hilo art students will be at the concert screen printing t-shirts for purchase on the theatre lanai.

In addition to the show, the Orchestra has organized an ongoing fundraising effort. You can find more information and contribute by visiting their website, where they are offering shirts, hats, mugs, and a chance to donate directly to their crowdfunding campaign. The new website is available at www.hilojazz.com.

Since 2013, the UH Hilo Jazz Orchestra’s annual Frank Zappa tributes have provided Hilo with an exciting window into some of the most exciting music of the 20th century. Tackling the genre-bending and often tricky-to-perform pieces of music, each show gives audiences a chance to witness a rare example of the virtuosic composer’s works realized live on stage.

A recurring favorite in Hilo, the Orchestra’s Zappa tributes are often performed to sold-out crowds. The music takes a journey through hard rock, elegant jazz, delightfully bizarre neo-classical tangents, driving progressive adventures, and soulful rhythm and blues, all culminating in a sound that can only be described as “Zappa.” Working diligently to recreate the music while also adding their own flair, the Jazz Orchestra’s upcoming Holiday in Berlin show plans to include works from albums such as Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Sleep Dirt, and Chunga’s Revenge, among others.
