Vieux Farka Touré
April 13, 2018, 7pm
Vieux Farka Touré, often described as “the Hendrix of the Sahara,” will perform at the Kahilu Theatre Friday, April 13th at 7 pm for an unforgettable performance as he bridges cultural roots with present-day flare.
Vieux Farka Touré is a West African musician and the son of legendary Ali Farka Touré, a Grammy award-winning musician from Mali who passed away in 2006. Despite his father’s discouragement, Vieux’s love of music inspired him to secretly pursue life as a musician. With the help of a family friend, Toumani Diabeté, Vieux studied at the Mali Institut National des Arts and eventually convinced his father to give him his blessing to pursue his passion. Vieux’s debut album was released in 2007 and features tracks by both his father and Toumani.
In his first album Vieux followed his father’s musical roots combining Malian traditions and new variations of the West African music with American blues. Since then he has released eight albums and has found his own voice and style, branching out to include elements of rock, Latin music, and other African influences. Vieux has also chosen to continue his fathers work to eradicate malaria in Mali by donating 10% of his proceeds to Modiba’s “Fight Malaria” campaign in Niafunké.
