The Kahilu theatre is proud to present Waimea Community Chorus in their 26th Annual Christmas Concert Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 7 pm and Sunday, December 9 at 4 pm.
A timeless tradition in the town of Kamuela, the Waimea Community Chorus (WCC) under the direction of Barbara Kopra once again ushers in the holiday spirit at Kahilu Theatre with a variety of songs of the season. This year’s concert will feature a major work arranged by acclaimed composer and pianist Mark Hayes, TheInternational Carol Suites I-V, which debuted at Carnegie Hall in November 2017. “It is a pleasure to present this new, substantial tribute to the repertoire of carols,” says Kopra, who has worked with Hayes personally for two choral clinics on the Big Island in March of 2016 and again in February 2018. Both of the workshops culminated with a live performance highlighting singers from across the island learning new techniques and music.
The International Carol Suites is in five parts, representing 20 countries from around the world. Each part is broken into regions—Europe, Eastern Europe, British Isles, South America and North America. These movements contain familiar and not-so-familiar carols from the holiday traditions of these regions. In addition to the Suites, the 70+ singers and 20+ musicians will invite the audience to join in singing Christmas classics, It’s Beginning to look a Lot Like Christmas, We need a Little Christmas, and Silver bells. The performance will finish with a beautiful rendition of the Hawaiian song Po La’i E , also known as Silent Night.
