Waimea Community Chorus Concert 1940’s: The Golden Age of Song

The Waimea Community Chorus (WCC) will perform its 25th annual spring concert on Saturday, June 2 at 7:00 pm and Sunday, June 3 at 4:00 pm at the Kahilu Theatre. Inspired by music from The Great American Songbook, WCC Musical Director Barbara Kopra and the 60-chorus performers will present 1940’s: The Golden Age of Song. WCC began in 2016 with music from the 1900’s with Tin Pan Alley and continued last year with music from the 1930’s with The Joint is Jumpin.’ The Golden Age of Song will be the third and final chapter of the 20th century American repertoire. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at kahilutheatre.org, (808) 885-6868 or at the Kahilu Theatre Box Office.

Kopra, in her 14th year as Director of the Chorus, has chosen popular music of the 1940’s era including Chattanooga Choo Choo, At Last, You Are My Sunshine, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, as well as music from hit Broadway shows including the great team of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma, Carousel and South Pacific. Kopra says she is, “looking forward to creating the narration for the concert – which will be actual memories of the chorus members. Sharing their own personal stories, one member recalls in 1944, at the age of 5, she sang Bluebirds Over the White Cliffs of Dover at Fort Bragg, California, and her song was sent out over the airways for the military. Another member has fond memories as her parents sang Sentimental Journey when she was a young girl in the 1950’s.” Kopra remembers her own mother’s story of working at the switchboards when the radio announcement came through that World War II was over.

Supporting Kopra and the chorus will be an instrumental jazz ensemble comprised of local musicians Alex Czerny on piano, Joe Barry on bass, Noa Eads on drums, Greg McKenna on alto sax, Natan Gore on tenor sax, Susan Garrod on trombone, and Charley O’Kelly on trumpet. There will also be a special guest performance by David Tarnas on flute. WCC will perform 1940’s: Golden Age of Song Saturday, June 2, at 7:00 pm and Sunday, June 3, at 4:00 pm.
