The Waimea Community Chorus presented its 27th Annual Holiday Concert Songs for the Holiday at the Kahilu Theatre last Friday and Saturday (December 13-14). Here are a few video clips from Saturday afternoon’s presentation.
Under the direction of Barbara Kopra, the Waimea Community Chorus featured compositions like “An Appalachian Winter,” a Christmas Cantata composed by Joseph Martin. This work celebrates the legacy of early American carols and hymnody. Composed in the spirit of folk music, the cantata combines traditional sounds with more rustic elements creating a blend that is fresh and pleasing. The second half of the evening’s performance featured two Hebrew pieces, “Avinu Malkenu” and “Al Hanissim,” as well as several popular holiday songs with an audience sing-a-long.
From first time performers to well-seasoned vocalists, this year the Waimea Community Chorus has 65 members ranging in age from 16 to 86 who all share a passion for singing. Joining the singers on stage were 20 instrumentalists from around the Big Island.
The Waimea Community Chorus will pay tribute to singer and composer Elton John on May 30, 2020, at the Kahilu Theatre. Since the debut of his first album in 1969, Elton John has earned 5 Grammy Awards, an Academy, Golden Globe, Tony and Disney Legends Award. The chorus will perform many popular hits including songs from “The Lion King” and “Aida.” Find tickets here.
